Palma de Mallorca - Capital of the Balearic Islands

Palma de Mallorca is the capital and largest city of the Spanish island of Mallorca. It is located on the south coast of the island on the Bay of Palma and has approximately 400,000 inhabitants. Palma de Mallorca is a popular tourist city that offers many attractions and sights.

Palma de Mallorca has a long and diverse history dating back to Roman times. The city was conquered and influenced by various peoples, such as the Byzantines, Arabs, Aragonese, and Castilians. The traces of these cultures can still be seen today in the city's architecture and heritage.

The old town of Palma de Mallorca is the heart of the city and a place full of charm and character. Here you can admire the impressive Gothic cathedral La Seu, which was built on the remains of a mosque and took over 600 years to complete. The cathedral also houses some works of art by Antoni Gaudí and Miquel Barceló. Next to the cathedral is the Almudaina Palace, the former residence of the Moorish and Christian rulers, which now serves as a museum.

The old town is also a labyrinth of narrow streets and squares that hide many historic buildings, churches, monasteries, museums, and galleries. Some of the most notable are the town hall, the Llotja building, the former 15th-century trading center, the Arab bath, the only surviving example of Islamic architecture in the city, the Es Baluard Museum of Modern Art, which houses a collection of works by Picasso, Miró, and other artists, and the Casal Solleric Museum of Mallorcan Culture, housed in an 18th-century Baroque palace. The old town is also a paradise for shopping lovers, who can find a variety of shops here, from traditional craft shops to modern boutiques. The main streets are the Passeig des Born, an elegant avenue with cafes and terraces, the Rambla, a pedestrian zone with flower stalls and street artists, and the Avinguda Jaume III, a modern shopping street with international brands. The old town borders the port of Palma de Mallorca, one of the largest and busiest ports in the Mediterranean. The port is both a commercial and leisure port, home to many ferries, cruise ships, yachts, and boats. The port also offers a beautiful promenade for walking or cycling with views of the sea and the city. At the end of the harbor is Bellver Castle, a 14th-century circular fortress offering panoramic views of the city.
