Teide: A Volcanic Wonderland

Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak and an active volcano, is located in Teide National Park on Tenerife. Its dramatic landscape of lava formations, craters, and rock formations can be explored on a variety of hiking trails. Here are three popular hiking routes:

  • Teide - Pico Viejo - Mirador de las Narices del Teide (S-9): This challenging hike takes you from the summit of Teide to Pico Viejo, the island's second-highest peak, and then to the Mirador de las Narices del Teide viewpoint, offering stunning views of the 1798 lava flows. The round trip takes about 10 hours and requires excellent physical condition, sure-footedness, and alpine experience. (A permit is required to ascend to the summit.)

  • Roques de García (S-3): This easy hike takes you around the Roques de García, a group of bizarre rock formations created by lava. The hike lasts about 2 hours and offers fantastic views of Teide and the surrounding landscape.

  • Montaña Blanca - Pico del Teide (S-7): This challenging hike takes you from Montaña Blanca, a white lava cone, to the summit of Teide. The hike takes about 5.5 hours and requires a permit, which can be applied for online. You can also use the cable car to shorten part of the route.

Some of my pictures:

The woods around Mount Teide are part of the Corona Forestal Nature Park, which surrounds the Teide National Park. They're mostly made up of Canary Island pines that have gotten used to the dry and rough climate. These woods are a nice change from the barren volcanic landscape and are home to lots of different plants and animals, including special ones you can only find there, like the Canary Island chiffchaff, the Tenerife blue chaffinch, and the Teide violet.

I'd highly recommend hiking Mount Teide if you love nature and are looking for a bit of an adventure. It's an incredible volcano that's sure to create some unforgettable memories. Plus, you'll learn a ton about the island's geology, history, and culture.

I'm confident you'll love a hike around Teide, as long as you're well-prepared and follow safety guidelines. Make sure to pack plenty of water, food, sunscreen, and warm layers—the weather can change quickly. And don't forget about the altitude—it can cause shortness of breath or dizziness. Always stick to the marked trails to protect the environment and avoid getting lost.

If you want more tips for a successful Teide hike, invest in some good hiking gear designed for mountainous terrain. Also, check the Teide National Park website for the latest weather forecasts and trail conditions.

I would choose the trailhead at El Amparo, via La Montañeta and continuing towards La Pajarera on the Pista del Canal trail. It's not as crowded and you can get everywhere. With a tent and some time ;). El Amparo is located slightly south of Icod de los Vinos, in the northwest of the island.

By the way, I have something else for you: a short video of a festival in El Amparo. Check it out at the end of the post!🥾
